Tamil Youth Melbourne - Discussion Group
- initiated by a gathering of like-minded individuals, who on seeing the
lack of development in NorthEast Sri Lanka, were driven to do what they
can to help. As a founding step, a concerned group of young Tamils have
come together to help organise the effort. They hope to build the
initiative into one that helps contribute to the growing humanitarian
and development needs of the Tamil homeland. |
|
Australian Tamil Youth Project - endeavours to send youths to Northern and
Eastern Sri Lanka, where they will come to experience the life people
have to endure there. This project has three main objectives: (1)

gain valuable insight about the Culture, and come to see places of
Historical significance in the North and East of Sri Lanka.
(3)Awareness- In gaining a first hand experience of hardships endured in
Sri Lanka , a better perspective can be gained in how we can come to
effectively help people in Sri Lanka. |

Pallavi - Music Organisation
"Pallavi literally
means 'sprout', a vegetation image associated in Indian symbol systems
with rasa (sap, juice flavour, essential inspiring vitality) and it
carries a sense of a beginning. It suggests the idea of a seed and a
shoot, or a bud, the beginning of efflorescence and the stem resource
for an expansion. Until Subbarama Dikshitar's time (he published Sangita
Sampradaya Pradarshini in 1904), it was usually called pallava. One
traditional etymology breaks the word into three syllables and derives
each from a component of a song: padam (‘word’), layam (‘rhythm’),
vinyasam (‘display’). T S Parthasarathy has called this a mere ‘guess’,
but perhaps this playful derivation could be understood more as a
helpful invention, a mnemonic or pedagogical device, rather than literal
linguistic etymology or erroneous speculation. It sums up the parts of
the nucleus in a nutshell. From the pallavi, the embryonic original
impulse, and so the essential spirit of the work, the whole of the kriti
develops..." |

Melbourne Siva Vishnu Temple
- The temple is a culmination of years of
planning by the Hindu Society of Victoria, formed in 1982. The
temple site at Carrum Downs comes close to the scriptural
injunctions for auspiciousness: closeness to sea and river
confluences. It is situated not far from the picturesque beaches of
Port Phillip Bay, and the pretty lakes around the Patterson river.
The worship is centred around Shiva and Vishnu the presiding deities
of two dominant streams in the Hindu ritualistic tradition. The
temple attempts to bring the two streams together and provide a
synthesis. |
